Spiders Web too much for the Ragin' Bulls

Concord Spiders spun a nasty web that kept Hickory Ridge behind on the score board all night.  The Ragin' Bulls drop their 2nd consecutive conference game by a score of 33-20.

Running back Brian Baltimore carried the load for Hickory Ridge and the stats will probably be one of his best efforts of the year.  Baltimore carried the ball 28 times for 241 yards.  Several times the Jr ran off 10+ yards, but the Ragin' Bulls could not stop an agressive passing attack from Concord.

The Spiders threw for 4 touch downs and 337 yards through the air.

An unusal number of penalties for both squads for a game this late in the season.  25 total penalites were accpeted.  10 for Hickory Ridge and 15 against the Spiders.

The Ragin' Bulls will need to turn things around for the final regular season game next week at home against arch rival, J M Robinson.

Congratulations to Hickory Ridge defensive stand out Dillon Burdette.  Burdette received the 95.1 FM High School player of the week honars.

AL Brown to much for the Ragin' Bulls

Hickory Ridge lost its first conference game tonight as AL Brown proved to be too much for the Ragin' Bulls.  Final score AL Brown 38 - Hickory Ridge 13.

The first downs were close with Kannapolis only having 1 more than Hickory Ridge.  When it seem to matter, the Wonders were able to break off long runs for big gains and 278 yards of rushing.  The Wonders ran 20 less offensive plays but owned the play clock for 28:06 while HRHS had the ball for 19:54.

Next week the Ragin' Bulls travel to another conference contest at Concord High.

A WONDER-ful night for Ragin' Bull JV Football

The Ragin' Bulls came away with a very exciting come from behind win to beat AL Brown JV tonight at the Ridge. After trailing for three quarter the Ragin' Bulls fought a tough opponent from Rowan County and took the lead half way through the 4th quarter.

AL Brown started the scoring after an interception and return set the Wonders up on the Hickory Ridge 5 yard line. Hickory Ridge answered in the second quarter on a 2 yard pass from Foil Stafford to DJ Barnes. Kannapolis answered almost immediately with a 60 yard run to make the score 14-7. With less than a minute before half time, the Wonders quarterback found the end zone for their 3rd touch down. The extra point was missed, giving the Wonders a 20-7 lead at the break.

Both Defenses came out fired up for the 3rd quarter which saw no scoring for either school. The nearly capacity crowd was not disappointed in the final 10 minutes of play.
Andrew Reynolds got things going for the Ragin' Bulls with a 2 yard run to make it a one possession game. Wonders up 20-14. Fireworks came with 4:41 mark when a half back pass play from DJ Barnes to Jason Eury went for 81 yards and a TD. The extra point by reliable Adrian Ike put Hickory Ridge on top for the first time all night. On the following possession for AL Brown, the Ragin' Bull defense came up big. Derrick Pitts came up with a pick 6, returning an interception 42 yards giving the Ragin' Bulls a 28- 20 lead with 3:26 to play. Kannapolis did not go away easy. The HRHS defense held tough, forcing AL Brown to go for it on 4th and 2 from the Hickory Ridge 47 yard line. A sweep around the left side and AL Brown found running room all the way for a 47 run TD. After a time out the key play of the night turned out to be a 2 point conversion try for AL Brown. As the QB tried to make the corner of the end zone on a sweep play to the right, a wall of Ragin' Bull defenders stopped him short.

The last gasp for AL Brown was a failed onside kick off that traveled a mere 5 yards before being touched by an AL Brown player. Two snaps later and the Hickory Ridge JV had salted the game away.

Final:     Hickory Ridge 28 - AL Brown 26

Be sure to come out to the Ridge next Thursday as the Ragin' Bull JV team host the Concord Spiders at 6:30 PM.

Ragin' Bulls Triumph over the Trojans 30 - 27

It was a huge signature win for Marty Paxton and the Hickory Ridge Ragin' Bulls Friday night.  As Robbie Newell picked off a Trojan pass to seal the win.

Northwest Cabarrus rolled into the Ridge as heavy favorites agains the HRHS squad.  The first quarter score of 14-0 in favor of Northwest gave the home crowd a sense of looming defeat.  It was a determined Hickory Ridge team playing its best game of the season to close the score to 14-10 at the half.

Northwest coming out on their first possession of the 3rd quarter went right down the field and made the score 20 -10 after a missed extra point attempt.  Hickory Ridge answered with touch down of their own to cut the lead to with in 3 points, 20-17.  The enssuing kick off was fumbled and Hickory was set up to take advanatge of the short field.  A few plays later, the Ragin' Bulls found the end zone and lead for the first time.  The point after was just wide right and the score was HRHS 23- Northwest 20.

Hickory Ridge forced a punt after kicking off, but with the possession they were not able to run much more than a minute off the clock going 3 and out, punting the ball back to Northwest.   Northwest staged another drive and with the help of an un-sportsmanlike penalty reached the end zone to re-take the lead 27-23.  When Hickory Ridge received the kick off, there was just over 3 minutes to play.  During the game winning drive, the Ragin' Bulls had to convert two 4th down plays to stay alive.  The game winner came on a 21 yard pass from Nick Moelle to John Martinez,

After the final kickoff, it was a pass play over the middle from Northwest that Newell made the game saving interception.

The Ragin' Bulls had 361 yards of total offense to 204 for the visiting Trojans.  Brian Baltimore lead all Ragin' Bulls rushers with 78 yards, Coye Still had 61 yards and Cody Cothern posted 32 yards on the ground.

Next Week the Bulls travel to A L Brown.

Ragin' Bulls cage the MP Tigers 17-14

Hickory Ridge spoils homecoming for the Mount Pleasant Tigers.  The Ragin' Bulls slip past Mount Pleasant with timely defense and help from Mount Pleasant turn overs.  Hickory Ridge took the opening kickoff and with a first series drive ending inside the 10 yard line, hit on a field goal.   Mount Pleasant countered before the end of the first with a 93 yard pass to the Ragin' Bulls 1 yard line.  Another pass for 1 yard completed the scoring drive.  A failed 2 point conversion made the score MP 6, HRHS 3.

Hickory Ridge gets a touch down in the second quarter so the first half score is HRHS, 10,  MP 6.

Coming out of the locker room to start the 3rd Mount Pleasant received the ball.  One of the best defensive efforts all year by the Bulls happens on the first play.  Robbie Newell snares a pass at the line with a single handed grab, then breaks 2 tackles as he turns the play into a pick 6 for the Bulls.  As it turns out, these 13 seconds are the difference in securing tonights win.   As the Bulls are plagued by penalties and poor officiating let Mount Pleasant get to within 3 points with 4 minutes left in the game.

HRHS hang on to win, and go 3-0 in conference play.

Be sure to check out the Football blog for more stats and highlights.

Next week Hickory Ridge plays a very tough team from Northwest Cabarrus.

Ragin’ Bulls Run Wild over Cox Mill 56-13

Homecoming was certainly sweet for the Hickory Ridge fans. The Hickory Ridge Ragin’ Bulls had no problem in overcoming the first year program at Cox Mill. Three years ago the Bulls started a program without a senior class so for tonight it brought back memories of those early tough games. Cox Mill without a senior player on the field was never a threat for the battle tested Ragin’ Bulls. Brian Baltimore and Cody Cothern found large chunks of yardage just about everywhere they looked. The middle, left end, right end, it did not seem to make a difference. Kirk Wert also got a pick six for the defense with a 30 yard interception return in the second quarter. The Ragin’ Bulls totaled 475 yards in rushing offense. Only a 17 passing yards on the night.

This was an important win for the Rabin’ Bulls as the team is now 2-0 in conference play. It was also a chance for several players to see action on a rare Friday night. That experience will pay off down the road as Hickory Ridge continues to build a program around the spread offense.

A few stats: Brian Baltimore rushed for 208 yards and 3 TD’s. Cody Cothern 115 yards and 2 scores. Sophomore T J Allen ran for 55 yards and 2 TD’s.

Next Week Hickory Ridge travels to Mt Pleasant for another conference game. The last time Hickory Ridge visited Mt Pleasant it was the very first game ever played by the Ragin’ Bulls, which lost 56 – 0. The bad taste after that game still lingers for many Hickory Ridge faithful.
